F.A.Q.

What is the lab?

Here at Audio Genetics,we feel a certain responsibility to advance the field of audio capture and manipulation so that we can promote a greater sonic diversity.  There are so many untapped sources for sound,as well as unbowed and unrattled, that our mission at the lab is to identify these sources, collect information and samples about them, and reassemble their aural genetics in such as way as to be useful for other music scoring researchers to use in their musical experiments.

What kinds of sounds do you create?

Our principle investigators are fascinated by all kinds of sounds.  To maintain focus and direction in the lab, however,we have decided to direct our energies towards instrument libraries that seem to have one foot in door of nature, and one foot in the beaker of experimentation.  What this means is that you’re unlikely to find our research teams decoding the genome of an acoustic piano note by note, but we would certainly enjoy the audio mayhem of attacking that piano with rubber balls, zippers, and woolen mittens, and then running those samples through audio processing chains that could turn a sneeze into a half-hour concert.

Ultimately, our goal is to make sounds that are useful, performable, and flexible.  We take great pride in getting sounds that can really breathe and move. With all of our instruments, custom scripting and multiple round robins will be commonplace as ways to keep the “machine” out of your machine.

How can I purchase a sonic specimen or instrument library?

As new species are discovered,we will post our findings on the main news tab of the site, and the species will be given its own product page with detailed information, audio examples, and an “add to cart” button.  Click “add to cart” to add an instrument to your online shopping cart.  When you are finished shopping, just click the yellow “Check out with PayPal” button to be taken directly to a secure PayPal page for payment.  You can either pay with a credit card or your PayPal account (if you have one).  Your order is processed automatically, and you will immediately receive an email with a personal download link for your species.

Is my credit card information safe?  Scientists can’t be trusted.

Your payment information is handled entirely by PayPal,so we at the lab never see your credit card information.

What kind of hi-tech authorization scheme is used on the sample library?

At Audio Genetics, our interactions with the delicate world of sound species has led us to feel that the stress put on the library by being shackled into copy-protection schemes can lead to many adverse reactions for all parties involved.  Our general trust for all lifeforms, combined with a general disinclination to troubleshoot fancy hex encoding platforms, has led us to just provide purchasers with their product without all the extra fuss.  There is no serial number or dongle system required.  Purchasers will be given a single website link with one login-password screen where the downloads from an order can be found.  Hopefully our musical research partners will understand that our low prices and human-driven system should be fair enough to not encourage piracy.  We will be routinely offering free fully-coded species as regular intervals as well.  This will act partly as a control group for our paid products, and provide outside researchers with quality specimens and a view into what our lab can produce.  Please pirate these free products at your leisure.

What are the system requirements for your sound libraries?

This will vary somewhat for each individual product,as some more advanced libraries may make use of the latest features of various platforms.  For the most part, however, libraries will be coded for Native Instruments Kontakt 3.5,and can be run on a PC or Macintosh.  You must already own the FULL version of Kontakt.  Our libraries are not supported by the free downloadable Kontakt player or Kompakt.  No version of Kontakt is included in our downloads.  You will receive the necessary samples, scripts, and instrument files only.  If you have any questions, please contact the lab before purchasing, and always check the requirements for individual products as they are released.
